Province of Hampshire and Isle of Wight
February 2015
Earlier this year the Provincial Grand Master, Mike Wilks and his wife Kay visited the Headquarters of the Macular Society in Andover to present a cheque for £50,000 from The Freemasons’ Grand Charity.
Macular conditions affect the central part of the retina and cause loss of central vision. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK, with over 600,000 people living with late stage AMD and over 70,000 new cases every year. Late stage AMD means you cannot recognise faces, read the newspaper or watch TV.
You probably know someone with the early stage condition – new research identifies that 50% of the over 65’s are at risk.
To find out more about macular disease, its prevalence, risk factors, signs and symptoms and the impact it can have on someone’s life, volunteer speakers are available from the Macular Society.
If your Lodge or Masonic Centre is having a ‘White Table’ meeting or any other social event, perhaps you might like to invite a speaker from the Macular Society to give you an insight into this cruel disease?
This service is free; however, contributions towards travelling expenses will be gratefully received.
If you would like to receive a talk please contact the Macular Society volunteer team on 01264 326 622 or email
For information, advice or support concerning macular disease,
